It's been in the works for a while, but we've finally made the move to WordPress. On the surface, that's probably not very exciting, but behind the scenes it lays the foundation for some exciting enhancements at Family Fan Club.
The first big change is the integration of the store and blog. From this point forward, we'll be blogging from the integrated blog function native to WordPress.
The second and most exciting change is the ability to offer products direction from the lab at Family Fan Club. As we announced on June 7th, we're starting to offer Performance tech t-shirts for triathletes, runners, cyclists and swimmers. The move to WordPress based store will allow us to supplement our partnership with CafePress with products made and delivered directly from Family Fan Club. We'll be printing all of our Performance Tech Shirts on 100% polyester ALO shirts with styles for both Men and Women. Every design in our store will be available on demand and in low volumes (as low as one!). In addition to our standard designs, we can also personalize any design or simply supplement an existing the design.
In the end, the benefit will be to our customers, providing more options with products directly from Family Fan Club.

Performance Tech T-shirts for Triathletes, Runners and Cyclists
You asked for it, you got it! Performance Tech T-shirts for Triathletes, Runners and Cyclists (or Adventure Racers, High School Sports or anything!) will soon be available on the Family Fan Club website. Every design in our catalog will be available on light colored 100% polyester performance tech shirts for training and racing.
Over the last month we've been piloting a printing process that uses heat to transfer dye onto the fabric. The benefit of this process vs. other methods is that the fabric is permanently dyed so it can be washed without damaging the quality of the image, as well as resistant to discoloration from UV light and air. Needless to say we've been impressed with the quality and will soon be updating the store with all the details regarding how to purchase these new shirts.
If you can't wait for us to get the webpage updated and need a Performance Tech T-shirt NOW, contact us with the details of what you're looking for and we'll get it done!

Don't start training without Road ID
Road ID is the perfect gift and training partner for the runner, cyclist, triathlete, or active person on your gift list. If you can't speak for yourself, your Road ID will. If you don't know exactly which Road ID to purchase, just order a Road ID Gift Card or an online eCard.
Road ID: It's not just a piece of gear - it's peace of mind.
Kim and I both have Road ID bracelets and it really does give me peace of mind when Kim is out for a run or when I'm out for a ride on my bike. It's nice to know that if something happens to me, people will know who I am and how to contact family and friends. We even used our Road Ids for our kids a few times this summer when we were out at busy locations, such as Yankee Stadium!
If you don't think it can happen to you, checkout the testimonials. It's the best $20 you could spend this season.

Happy get off the couch 3rd anniversary to me!
It's been three years this week since I decided enough was enough and got off the couch to get in better shape. Here are the reasons I wrote about here and here in 2008 as I started this blog. As I look back over the last three years I certainly feel great having:
* Lost 25 lbs. At my peak fitness in July 2008 preparing for Boulder Peak Olympic Triathlon, I was down 40 lbs, back to my Navy weight in 1995. I've gained some of that back, but overall very happy with how much better a feel.
* 9 Triathlons. 5 Sprints, 2 Olympic & 2 relays as the swimmer.
* 2 Bolder Boulder 10Ks & a couple handfuls of 5Ks
* Started Family Fan Club as a side project to create triathlon, running, marathon, cycling, duathlon, swimming and personalized t-shirts, stickers, sweatshirt, ornaments and more for family, friends and athletes. We've had a great time & meet a lot of wonderful athletes and supporters over the years.
So, three years down and an unlimited number of years ahead. This year I'm going to be focusing on shorter races and get my fitness where it needs to be for future considerations.
We've got a bunch of new products and designs in store that we'll be adding over the coming weeks and months. We're finalizing details on an exciting new product offering that we'll announce more about later this spring.
As everyone dials in their plans for 2010 race season, please considering making Family Fan Club part of your race schedule. Whether you're an athlete, sherpa, family or friends, we've got something for everyone, including personalized t-shirts.

Flashback - 1989 Triathlon Worldchampionships: Scott vs. Allen
Happy New Year to everyone! With the holidays complete, it's time to start thinking about the upcoming season. Like many of you, I'm working on my race schedule for the coming year. When I have that figured out, I'll let you know.
I recently read an article in the "new" Inside Triathlon format about the 1989 duel between Dave Scott and Mark Allen. Great article and great video series complete with Rick and Dick Hoyt, one of the most inspiring and selfless stories I've ever heard.

Social network for endurance athletes
During lunch today I was surfing the net and stumbled upon a social network for endurance athletes called Athlinks. You can track all race results, training, calendar, email, rivals, photos and gear reviews within the community. I searched for my name and most of the races I've done over the last two years are already in the system, I just needed to create a profile to associate them with me. There was one race that was not me, a 6 hour marathon, so I just simply deleted that one.
Go sign up and join the community. You can see my profile here and you can see my Family Fan Club profile here. Add me and Family Fan Club as a friend.
I'm sure I don't have a full appreciation of all the benefits, but I'll explore and report back.
See you online!

2008 Ford Ironman World Championship - Results
I spent most of the day on Saturday watching the 2008 Ford Ironman World Championships live on Ironman.com. I missed the start and exit from the swim, but I watched the balance.
Spoiler alert: Don't read the rest if you don't want to know who won!
The men's 2008 Ford Ironman World Champion is Craig Alexander in 08:17:45, which represented a 3 minute improvement over last year's second place performance. Craig lives and trains in Boulder in the summer, so another top level triathlete you could run into during a workout. Keep your eyes open, you know never who you'll run into!
The women's 2008 Ford Ironman World Champion is Chrissie Wellington in 09:06:23, good for 40th overall, defending her title with a convincing 15 minute win over second place.
Some of the interesting points of the race:
** Chrissie Wellington is clearly the top women's triathlete in the world. She won by 15 minutes and that includes 10 minutes standing on the side of the road waiting for tech support to fix a flat tire. If you remove the 10 minute flat time, she wins by 25 minutes and goes under 9 hours. Amazing and she makes it look effortless.
** Chris McCormack was stung by bad luck with a broken gear cable just past the midway point on the bike. Macca was in the top 10 at the time, but was unable to continue due to equipment failure. Macca later joined the online broadcast and he sounded fit, strong and disappointed. He was in the group with Craig Alexander at the time of the bike failure. After catching up with tech support, Macca learned that it would take 20 minutes to fix, he decided the race was lost and decided not to continue. It would have been great to see that finish!
** Andy Potts really surprised me. Andy finished 8th, competing in his very first Iron distance race. Granted, he's the reigning 70.3 World Champion and a two time olympian, but for the first time in Kona, that's an impressive finish. I heard / read that he'd never run past 15 miles (ever) or rode past 100 miles (ever), so that makes it even more impressive. I'd watch out for Andy in the future if he decides to move to Iron distance full time.
** Rutger Beke again exemplified his professionalism. If you watched the Ironman broadcast on NBC last year, you'll recall that they followed one pro triathlete who did not have his "A" race last year, but would not quit out of respect for the other competitors and the race itself. He came back this year for a 4th place finish, really impressive.
It was a good day of watching triathlon. The big disappointment of the day was losing Macca due to equipment failure. I wonder if it would be possible to have backup gear on hand and provide some mechanism/rules for equipment replacement during the race. Frustrating to see the defending champ knocked out due to equipment failure. Or perhaps it's just part of the game and should remain unchanged. What do you think? (Add a comment)
I'll look forward to the NBC broadcast of 2008 Ford Ironman World Championships, likely in December. Hopefully Bicycle Village will again host a viewing party and get Craig Alexander or Chrissie Wellington to speak. (They had Macca last year.)

Oktoberfest Sprint Triathlon - Longmont
Today was my last scheduled race of the season, a local race at Union Reservoir in Longmont, Colorado. I've been wanting to get a couple of my friends, Russ and UD, from work involved with triathlon, so we teamed up for a relay. I thought the Oktoberfest Triathlon sponsored by Without Limits Productions would be a perfect introduction race. As with most athletes, the swim keeps those that aren't comfortable in the water out of the sport of triathlon, so I did the swim. UD biked across America while in college, so the bike leg was a natural fit for him and Russ is a strong runner, so he ran the anchor leg. Our goal was to have fun, no injuries and not embarrass ourselves! My goal for Russ and UD was to get them interested in doing a triathlon as an individual or at least another relay.
We decided our team name would be Need More Cowbell and I had some performance tees made by Electric Weave, which came out totally sweet. At the very least, we'd be the best dressed relay team. The nice the thing about doing triathlons in my home town is that I can sleep in since I live less than 3 miles from Union Reservoir. Also, since it was a small race, a more reasonable 8 am start was nice. We arrived around 7:25 and briefly discussed strategy. Russ and UD were pumped.
It was a little bit chilly when we started, but the water was not to bad. My wetsuit certainly didn't hurt, but it wasn't cold at all on my hands, feet or face. It felt nice. There were 4 waves, so I had to wait 13 minutes from the start of the race until the fourth and final wave. Finally the siren and I was off. Falling back on my Boulder Peak experience, I positioned myself for a fast and short swim along the buoys. I almost fee like I'm missing something, as it wasn't to crowded along this line. I made it to the first buoy second place in my wave, but I could tell pretty quickly that I went out to fast as I was quite tired. I slowed the pace, stopped to let a little water in my wetsuit, caught my breath and kept going. I got passed by a few people, but I'm quite sure that I still finished within top 10 for wave 4 swimmers. Unfortunately, for some reason the timing system didn't capture my time, so I can't say for sure, but I'd estimate 12 to 13 minutes.
I ran into transition, gave UD the timing chip and he was off. The bike course was a 4 mile loop repeated 3 times that circled UD's house, where his sons Alex & Adrian and wife Kathy cheered him on. UD finished in just under 42 minutes. When he returned to transition, I could tell he was winded, but jogged to the transition point and handed the timing chip to Russ. Russ ran off like someone was chasing him. Russ made quick work of the course, somewhere between 24 and 26 minutes we estimate, but again since the timing chip failed for us for some reason, we don't know the actual time. Our overall time was 1:28, but with a 13 minute swim, 42 minute bike, there's no way that Russ ran 33 minutes. We figure that 1:28 was our wave unadjusted time, which would have put us at 1:15, which seems fast, but Russ was really pumped on adrenaline, so 21 minutes isn't out of the question. In reality, we probably did something between 1:15 and 1:28.
We celebrated our accomplishment with a frosty beverage from Oskar Blues, a local micro brewery in Lyons, CO. We recalled the race, watched others visit and shortly after finishing started to joke that we probably one the relay category. We also started talking about doing more relays and I think if Russ sets his mind to it and wants it, with a plan to build swim endurance, Russ could be ready for a triathlon by June 2009. Make the commitment Russ, Greeley Sprint Triathlon, first weekend in June. It's a pool swim, you can do it! We also vied to make this a semi-annual event, where we'll do a relay in the Spring and Fall.
To our surprise, we did win the relay category and are now the Oktoberfest Sprint Triathlon reigning and defending champions. We even got trophies, glass boots, I suspect for enjoying Oktoberfest tasty beverages.
Good job UD and Russ!

5430 Boulder Peak Old Stage vs. Me - Rnd 1
The 5430 Boulder Peak triathlon is less than 3 weeks away and I still haven't rode up Old Stage. Old Stage is the famous 15% grade, 600 ft vertical climb over 2/3 of a mile that starts about 5 miles into the bike portion of the race. I've driven it once and it scared the heck out of me. I've been wondering if I could do it and how I would feel mentally & physically. I've been figuring that I need to ride Old Stage at least three times before the Boulder Peak, to get my legs under me and prove to myself that I can do it.
Old Stage is a very interesting section of the course. As urban as Boulder is, heading out on US 36 and out towards Old Stage you get back to nature really quick, where it's not uncommon to see deer, fox or black bears. Yes, black bears. In fact I know of at least two occassions where cyclists have HIT black bears on their bikes and lived to tell about it. Here are a couple of stories here and here. I can't imagine hitting a bear at 45 MPH on my bike, feet clipped into pedals and flying end over end.
Back to me. I decided that yesterday would be my first attempt at Old Stage. My goal was to just ride Old Stage once and get up with no stopping. I started at the open space trail parking lot on Lee Hill Rd. I took a quick lap around the neighborhood to get the blood flowing and then headed up. The incline is steady and annoying at first. If you were driving, you probably wouldn't even notice, but on the bike it's just annoyingly steep and continuous. I shifted down, down, down on the way up, wondering how I'm possibly going to make it up the hill when I'm already on the small ring? Finally I made it to Old Stage and the hardest part of the hill was facing me dead on. I continued to turn the crank continuously & steady, firmly in granny gear now, breathing heavy and just taking it one turnover at a time. I don't know if this is good or bad, but the hill is deceptively long, where you can't see the next section as your climbing. A rider could be easily fooled into thinking the climb is shorter than it is. I was by no means tearing it up, averaging about 5 mph, where I started to wonder just how slowly do you have to be going to fall over? I continued to push the pedals round and round until I finally made it to the top. It took almost 20 minutes from the trailhead (about 2.5 miles), but I made it with no walking or stopping.
I celebrated for a moment, snapped a couple of pictures and head back down. I quickly picked up speed and started to ride the rear break very hard as to not exceed 25 mph, which isn't easy. At one point I was squeezing down on both the rear and front brakes and still moving at a good clip. I returned to the trailhead in under 7 minutes after an uneventful ride down.
Summary: Round 1 goes to me.
Although I won round one by making it up the hill, I know that race day will be an entirely different challenge as I'll have swam 1500 meters and rode just over 5 miles out to the hill. I didn't see any bears, but I did see two deer. I haven't decided what Round 2 will be yet, hill repeats or riding the entire Boulder Peak course, but I will do both. I definitely want to do the hill at least 2 more times before race day to build up strength and confidence.

2008 Hy-Vee Triathlon

This past weekend, Family Fan Club traveled to Des Moines, Iowa for the 2008 Hy-Vee Triathlon, where the last members of the men's and women's US Olympic Triathlon team were selected. Hunter Kemper and Sarah Haskins secured the final spots on the men's and women's teams respectively. Prior to the Pro's race,
there was an age group race with over 2,200 participants, which was a great opportunity to spread the word about Family Fan Club. We partnered with Rasmussen Bike Shop in Des Moines at the Hy-Vee Triathlon Expo to sell and spread the word about Family Fan Club. We met a lot of new and enthusisastic race day supporters, gobbling up rompers, t-shirts, stickers and magnets. The folks at Rasmussen Bike Shop did a great job presenting and promoting our triathlon gear!
The elite race was awesome, with basically the Michael Jordan, Wayne Gretzky and Joe Montana of triathlon participating. The prize for the top male and female winner was $200k! That's a lot of cash to swim, bike, run! We caught the tail end of the Women's race, won by Emma Snowsill from Australia. The men quickly followed and it was quite interesting. The swim was about 5 miles from the central transition and finish.
We got good position inside the stadium and waited for the athletes to arrive. I was really surprised how quick the swim leg was completed and how tight the cycling pack was. The first group of cyclists entered the stadium for the first of eight laps in a pack of about 25 riders. The action was tight, fast and furious. Each lap had a new leader, but no break aways until the 6th lap when Timothy O'Donnell from the USA broke away with a :30 to 1 minute lead, which seemed significant considering the pace/pack to this point.
After the 8th and final lap it was like a NASCAR pitstop in front of the main grandstand with 25 elite cyclists basically finishing simultaneously and sprinting into transition. It was really exciting to watch and everyone was out in under a minute to start the 1st of 4 laps. We quickly discovered that elite Triathlon is all about the run, where to this point in the race all competitors were within a minute or less of each other, it was very close. The run separated the contenders from the pretenders. Rasmussen Henning eventually pulled away for his second consecutive win, again pocketing $200k for the win in 2008 (He won in 2007 also).
The race for the 3rd and final Men's Triathlon Olympic berth was a race between Andy Potts (the reigning 70.3 World Champion) and two time Olympian Hunter Kemper.
Hunter pretty much had the lead the entire race and solidified it on the run, claiming the last spot on the 2008 Olympic team. Matt Reed was also at the race, but I suspect that with the win out of hand on the run, he shut it down to avoid injury. $200k is a pretty good incentive, but if the day is lost, no since in pushing it. That's not confirmed, but my guess. Hopefully he's not injured.
Anyway, we had a great time in Iowa, visiting college friends and triathlon. Doesn't get much better than that!

Greely Triathlon Expo
The 2008 Greeley Triathlon expo and packet pickup went great! We had triathletes, friends and family buzzing around the Family Fan Club tent. Based on today's activity, triathlete support and Family Fan Club will be well represented on race day.
2008 Triathlon season starts tomorrow
The 2008 Triathlon season officially starts for me tomorrow at the Greeley Triathlon. This is where it all started for me and Family Fan Club last year, where I did my first triathlon and Family Fan Club was born. I've been looking forward to the 2008 Greeley Triathlon pretty much from the day after the 2007 Triathlon. 2007 was fun, but I felt I could have done a lot better. Last year I finished in 1:37 with a 00:09:20 swim, 00:45+ bike and 00:37+ run/walk. My goals this year are:
* 1:20 or under
* Under 9 minute swim
* Under 40 minute bike
* Under 30 minute run
* Top 3 in Clydesdale division
Those are some lofty goals, particularly the last one, which in the scheme of things would be icing on the cake. I don't need to be top 3, but it would be nice! My training has been going pretty well. The simulated triathlons that I've done this year suggest that I will be right around 1:20. I think it will take 1:17 to be top 3, so not really counting on that.
In addition to the race, Family Fan Club will also have a booth at the Expo / packet pickup and on race day.
